Canvas painting with Make-up
This is a canvas painting I made using make-up. Although I have made several paintings with cosmetics before as well(you can find at least a few posts on my blog with the label Make-up Art; but they are all very old) this was the first time I made one on a canvas. The canvas was a lovely size, 6" by 6"inches(the smallest our art store has). I used substandard-quality lip gloss(which someone gave me and my sister as a gift but I decided to use them for art instead because they were not very good-quality), and some of my mom's expired lipsticks, plus some old eyeliner and nail-polish that we barely use. This is what I do with make-up. XD haha
Even though the results aren't satisfactory enough, I had a good time making this. I guess I hadn't drawn hands for a long time, even though they are something I love drawing. It was fun. :D
(Hey Zainab how are you? Sorry I'm months late replying, I've been quite busy with my studies lately... Anyway your latest posts are all really intriguing and I'm looking forward to commenting on each of them! :D)
ReplyDeleteOh wow, this canvas painting is so beautiful and has a super interesting theme!! I really like your unique idea of painting using make-up - the drawings you produce with cosmetics are so charming! This one for instance has a great impact with the use of bright pink on the hand and lighter shades for the background... it draws attention to the fist and its striking theme! I can see you must have spent a lot of time etching those abstract patterns on to the background as well. What were your influences for this piece? :D I think I must have mentioned this on one of your previous make-up paintings but I feel really inspired to try this out myself! Speaking of which, I've never actually produced a painting on a canvas before despite having so many blank ones... maybe it's because I'm frightened of ruining it haha. xD What's your advice? It's interesting to know that you love drawing hands too as I personally find them really frustrating to draw. >.< In that case, I'd love to see more of your drawings of hands! Love your canvas paintings as always! <3
Hi there! I've been missing your posts SO much! I'm fine and also busy with studies btw.. :)
DeleteThanks so much! I love your comments! xD I don't know what exactly made me make this, it just occured to me one day that I hadn't been drawing hands for a long time, which I really used to enjoy before so I just made it..
You should really try painting on canvas...it's a much more different experience compared to painting on paper, and you don't have to worry about ruining one because you can always paint over something you don't like (as long as you use the same medium). Mostly people use oils or acrylics for canvas paintings. I've tried both, and I personally feel that oils are more flexible, ie. you can paint over your previous work effectively while acrylics don't necessarily act that way. Some people prefer to sketch on their canvas with pencil before getting started, but you can skip that as well; in the end it doesn't really matter. :)
For starting out, I think you should select a small-to-medium-sized canvas, something like 8" by 10" or a 12" by 12" inches square... I've discovered that I find it more difficult to paint on a very large or very small canvas (but still, that might not apply to you as well). I do hope you try it some day, I'd love to see it on your blog! xD :D
(And I missed commenting on your posts too! <3 Hope your studies are going well!)
DeleteYou're most welcome, I'm glad to hear that!! :D Thanks so much for your tips on canvas painting, it will really help me out! I didn't really comprehend the differences between oils and acrylics well before and since I have both mediums your preference of oils is very informative for me. :) That's great! I'll check the sizes of the canvases I currently have and if they're not satisfactory I can find the sizes you mentioned at the art store (they have a wide range at reasonable prices so that's an option). I can't wait to get started! xD
You're welcome! I hope you'll have a good time exploring canvas-painting! XD
